Drinking Water Protection Program  »  Mapping Applications

Projects to protect the environment can impact drinking water sources in a positive way, especially if such projects are implemented within a Drinking Water Assessment Area (DWAA).  You can think of a DWAA as the area-of-influence surrounding your water source.  Protecting the DWAA is the first line of defense for your drinking water.

It makes economic sense to pursue projects that are strategically located to achieve multiple benefits. The mapping applications below provide information to help you make decisions regarding priority and planning of environmental projects.

Note: Many North Carolina programs and agencies have adopted our 'Susceptibility Ratings' as a way to prioritize environmental projects. Susceptibility describes the risk of potential contamination, and it can be higher, moderate or lower. Projects located within a DWAA and having higher susceptibility often receive greater priority for funding and other resources.

NC SWAP

This ArcIMS viewer contains a wealth of information regarding NC's 9000+ sources of public drinking water, including detailed source water assessment reports.  The viewer features a statewide database of over 37,000 potential sources of contamination that can influence local drinking water protection strategies.

NC Project Locator

Project locations can be found by entering an address, latitude and longitude, or by clicking on the map. Please note that if you locate a source by entering an address or latitude and longitude you must then click on the resulting blue dot to see the results. We are working with the contractor to improve this. The tabs along the left side of the screen provide information about the layers and the results.

The print function is currently not functional. If you need a printout the Alt + Print Screen function can be used as a temporary work around. We are working with the contractor to get the application fully updated and functioning.

If you notice any other issues with the application, please contact Rebecca Sadosky.
